"My whole life I was looking for community and I either couldn’t fit in or it was a community that seemed good but then led me astray. I really feel like I found Back on My Feet for a reason and now that I have the right community I can keep giving back and helping others."

From Addiction to Empowerment: Jose’s Journey of Recovery and Community

“My whole life I was looking for community and I either couldn’t fit in or it was a community that seemed good but then led me astray. I really feel like I found Back on My Feet for a reason and now that I have the right community I can keep giving back and helping others.”

Pressured into substance use by coworkers he thought were his friends, Jose was losing his battle to addiction. Unsure what to do or who to trust, he felt lost and isolated. But after joining Back on My Feet in San Francisco, Jose found the support he needed to build the foundation for recovery.

Jose says the welcoming morning Circle Ups gave him a community. Our volunteers helped him outline goals and fellow members motivated him to keep going. Jose passed that motivation along to fellow residents from his rehabilitation facility by waking them on Circle Up mornings.

“I felt very special and loved,” he said, “a feeling that is much needed after surviving rehab.” As Jose worked through his recovery, he attended our employment workshops where he learned how to highlight his qualifications and accomplishments.

Jose’s hard work paid off and he was hired as a Community Engagement Coordinator. “Back on My Feet provided me with great work choices,” Jose said, “choices I didn’t think were possible for me.” With a new outlook on life and a stable job, Jose is focused on keeping himself healthy and continuing self-improvement.
