September 14 , 2020 (Boston) – Back on My Feet is honored to share the news of a $1M gift from Liz and Phill Gross of Boston, MA. Back on My Feet is a national non-profit that combats homelessness using running/walking groups to bring communities together and focus on the end result: helping program participants (called “members”) find sustainable employment, financial security and stable housing. Volunteers from the community run or walk alongside members early morning, and by committing to this three day a week early morning program, members have the opportunity to move into Back on My Feet’s workforce development and training program, with the ultimate goal being self-sustainability. This $1M gift creates the Elizabeth and Phill Gross Emergency Alumni Fund, supporting Back on My Feet senior program members and program alumni who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 and are at risk of slipping back into homelessness.

While COVID-19 has prevented Back on My Feet communities from meeting in person, their virtual community is active and vibrant, supporting members and alumni as they navigate tumultuous employment and economic landscapes. Many members who have worked hard to get themselves out of being homeless, are now facing uncertainty. This is where the Elizabeth and Phill Gross Emergency Alumni Fund will be able to step in, helping to prevent backsliding and keeping lives moving forward.

“Liz and Phill’s dedication to Back on My Feet’s alumni and senior members is incredible. Our community has proven they are strong, showing up for each other in virtual spaces, making each other feel supported. But our members still face harsh economic realities, as many work in front line industries,” said Katy Sherratt, CEO, Back on My Feet. “This transformational gift will make emergency funds available to thousands across the country, providing the critical support they need during this global health and economic crisis.”

Since its founding, Back on My Feet has helped more than 7,500 individuals secure jobs and homes with the help of more than 150,000 volunteers and supporters. To learn more about the transformative work that Back on My Feet is doing, click here.

Operating in 13 major cities coast-to-coast, Back on My Feet recruits members at homeless and residential facilities and begins with a commitment to run three days a week. The second phase of the program, Next Steps, provides educational support, job training programs, employment partnership referrals and housing resources. Back on My Feet members have run more than 950,000 miles and obtained more than 7,500 jobs and homes, and the organization has engaged more than 150,000 volunteers and supporters. Every $1 invested in Back on My Feet returns nearly $2.50 to the local community through increased economic output and cost savings.
