“The strong foundation and good training from Back on My Feet helped me open more doors than I ever knew I could.”

Beyond the Darkest Point: Melvin’s Story of Perseverance

From Doubt to Discovery: Finding Strength in Community

When Melvin came to his first Circle Up with the Back on My Feet Dallas team, he was convinced that he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the rest of the team. At the time, the 62-year-old was battling addiction and severe depression. It was the darkest point in his life.

However, Melvin was quick to learn that with the support and encouragement of his team, he could do much more than he initially thought. “I was so pleased with how quickly I was able to keep up with the group,” he exclaimed. After becoming a member at Back on My Feet, Melvin recounts thinking to himself, “This could be a pristine opportunity for me to turn my life around.”

On his experience of joining and running with our Dallas team, Melvin shared, “I enjoyed those group runs, and how inclusive they were. I’m 62 years old and I was a little intimidated by running with all these top-notch professionals but they were so compassionate and caring and it was an honor to run with them.”

Knocking on Doors: A Journey to Employment

Throughout his time as an active member at Back on My Feet, Melvin’s confidence in himself and his ability to accomplish anything skyrocketed. With the help of Back on My Feet’s professional development resources, Melvin revamped his resume and found employment.

It didn’t come easily, though. Melvin shared, “I was knocking on doors for months before I got hired.” But with commitment, persistence, and hard work, Melvin was able to push open those doors. “The strong foundation and good training from Back on My Feet helped me open more doors than I ever knew I could.”

Employed and Empowered: Melvin’s Future

Flash forward to today, Melvin is now not only employed, but he also has his own home and continues to regularly run. What’s next on the horizon for Melvin, you might be wondering? Right now, his next big goal is to purchase a car, and we know he’ll get there in no time!

When asked about what advice he has for new members, Melvin shared that there is no such thing as an overnight transformation. “It doesn’t come overnight. It’s dedication, grit, and determination to go that extra step.” With this in mind, Melvin said that being a part of the Dallas team for Back on My Feet gave him “such a strong foundation and extra head start.”

There Is No Such Thing as Too Late

We’re so honored to have been a part of Melvin’s journey and look forward to cheering him on as he continues to crush his goals. Melvin’s story highlights that there is never a time better than now to make a change in your life. As Melvin himself said, “A better life does exist and is attainable.”

We take inspiration from him and other alumni in that it’s never too late to turn things around.
